OUT NOW - Combining ambient 2-step rhythms with haunting sound design, Austin-based experimental dance producer VVV returns with the fierce protest song, “How Many Times.” Inspired by the surge in global authoritarianism and the ruthless crackdown on civil disobedience, VVV’s brooding composition is a stirring dive into both dramatic minimalism and political commentary.

The rising tension of looping vocal samples is heightened by VVV’s dark chord structures and atmospheric breaks, meant to echo the struggles of millions whose human rights have been and continue to be suppressed. Reaching for substance beyond the music, VVV uses his powerful beat craftsmanship to capture and portray the plight of the voiceless on “How Many Times.”

OUT NOW - Beautifully delving into the disillusion of life, Austin-based shoegaze ensemble Single Lash wryly commiserates on the futility of existence with their latest single “To Laugh.” Featuring members of Future Museums and Thousand Foot Whale Claw, Single Lash’s drab cynicism is met by their signature wall of effects-drenched guitar and luscious synthesizers, giving this track both tonal and conceptual complexity.

While the straightforward, disheartened lyrics take spotlight, Single Lash orchestrates a wide range of instrumentation including organ, violin and 12-string acoustic guitar to reveal nuanced and reflective shades of emotion. As they continue to evolve aesthetically as a musical unit, Single Lash divulges an elegant self-critique on their highly personal new piece “To Laugh.”

OUT NOW - LA-based synth-pop savant Missions is back with a smooth rendition of the classic Supermax track “Loversnight.” In a show of solidarity with the people of South Africa, multiracial European band Supermax toured throughout the country in 1981, during the brutal segregation of apartheid.

Paying tribute to this spirit of civil equality, Missions reinterprets the piece through his signature cast of bright analog synthesizers, fresh bass lines and electronic vocals. We have been quiet the past month to allow space for BIPOC voices and to reflect on the ways our organization can contribute to the destruction of white supremacy.

Our release schedule has been paused to focus on community efforts, and as we gear up for new announcements, we'd like to recognize this historical moment in civil rights. We stand in solidarity with BLACK LIVES MATTER.

Michael C. Sharp kicks off the first installment of our new Honoring Black Music Series of DJ mixes aimed at celebrating the pivotal role of the African diaspora in the history of modern music. Please enjoy, and look for more installments coming soon from some of your favorite Holodeck artists.

We support Black lives. Period. And the time for solidarity is NOW. This is our pledge to be an ally and be a part of change. We recognize our education, advocacy and participation for racial equality have only just begun.

For the next 24 hours, Bandcamp is waiving their revenue share and many independent artists and labels are dedicating their sales in the name of racial and social justice. Any music or merch you buy from Holodeck right now will go to the organizations listed below.

To help raise money, several of our artists have new items available today, including a fresh single from electro-pop duo Flatliner, Missions' dancefloor remix of Future Museums, an EP of early rarities from Automelodi and new tee shirts from Lou Rebecca.

Help us support this movement at one of the most pivotal moments in modern civil rights. Longlive the memory of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and so many others that have fallen victim to our racist and corrupt systems.

OUT NOW - experimental multi-instrumentalist Michael C. Sharp plunges deep into his innermost kosmische realm on the new single “Motor Pt. 2: White Lines.” Referencing the classic krautrock “Motorik” drum pattern, the relentless, upbeat rhythm section of “Motor Pt. 2” drives through a hypnotic torrent of delay drenched guitar riffs and warm analog synth tones.

Featuring contributions from fellow Sungod co-founder Braden Balentine, Sharp slowly builds layers of pulsing bass, arpeggiated sequences and searing leads, culminating into a cacophonous melange of energy. This enveloping tide of sonic expansion has become the signature sound of Sharp’s prolific output and is once again superbly encapsulated on “Motor Pt. 2: White Lines.”

OUT NOW - Austin-based ambient duo FiRES WERE SHOT push the technical and conceptual definition of songwriting on their latest single “Dripping Bright.” For over twenty years, John Wilkins and Clay Walton have been processing acoustic guitar duets through a gamut of colorful effects and tape manipulation to produce experimental pieces rife with beautifully organic chaos.

Recorded live onto a four-track tape machine, “Dripping Bright” slowly builds layers of looping feedback into an ocean swell of colliding textures, climaxing into a singular eclipsing mass of sonic bliss. FiRES WERE SHOT once again demonstrate true mastery and control of their technique as they explore the seemingly limitless possibilities of the acoustic guitar.
